[UK] PhD Studentships in Optoelectronics at University of Portsmouth in UK - Postgraduate
Challenging opportunities for postgraduate research:
The ORC is a large interdisciplinary research centre with an international pioneering reputation in lasers, integrated and fibre optics, optical communications, optical sensor technology, optical physics and solid state laser technology. The ORC is ranked as one of the top five University groups worldwide and it was awarded the top grade (5) for its research in the 2001 national assessment of research in UK universities (RAE).
Funding
The ORC has a number of well-funded places for UK, EU and International students, which will fully cover programme fees and provide a tax free bursary of ?12,600 a year.
Entry requirements
Students from a wide range of science and engineering backgrounds are welcome to make an application. This includes Physics, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. Much of the research undertaken at the ORC crosses the normal boundaries of different subjects, so a diverse spread of students is important. The major pre-requisites are a first or upper second degree, or equivalent from an internationally recognised University. Applicants must also have a basic background in Mathematics. The requirements may vary depending on your background and the projects that you may be working on, so we would strongly recommend that you contact the ORC for further information.
In order to be able to contribute to the team, and for your own benefit, a good standard of English is required. If English is not your first language, you will be asked to reach an acceptable standard in an approved test. The requirements for research degrees at the ORC are a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or TOEFL score of 560 (computer-based TOEFL 220).
